View Full Version : Final Korrupted Hoodlum CD Contest!

SonicKaos
02-01-2009, 06:57 PM
First up, the winner of the previous contest: the m1L3z

Vid swung between 2 people, which was cool because it took a bit of planning. Didn't go nuts with the camera motion and kept it smooth, with decent framing. Guy running in at the end with the gestures was pretty funny and a good pan out.

One entry was filmer from the inside of a car - great idea and you likely would have won, except you got so far away from it that you could barely see the character at all. A slow zoom in may have helped that quite a bit, but it was definitely creative.

On to the next now.

Contest #4: Best Photo

Bust out the flash and your fancy lenses, no need for a record button this time. Luckily Skate doesn't require you to set your aperture and shutter speed before snapping a pic, but if you think that guarantees a good photo then you need a focus check. Let's see some great action shots framed up all nice and pretty. Remember, the background/surroundings are just as important as the skater in the picture, as it set's the mood. Don't leave half the picture blank unless there is a good reason for it!

Starts: February 1st
Ends: February 4th
Maximum 2 photo entries per person.
Entries will only be accepted if posted on Fluckit, but any video/picture format is fine.
Note: You can only win one contest of the 4. Feel free to enter again if you want but I'm not giving anyone more then 1 CD.

Other then that, there aren't really any limitations, so go wild!

The contest is going to work in a Sponsor Me style like the EA contests, but will be judged by more then one person. MagicNarcosis, MeanGoon and Mr. Lingo Starr along with myself will be picking out the winner each contest, and showering them with praise... but what does that matter when you'll also get one of these:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/blindsight15/100_1506.jpg

There are only 20 of them in existance, and I've only got 1 left... anyone want it? If so, you're going to have to come up with something good to win! This is the last change to win a Korrupted Hoodlum CD there will ever be!

Get out there and get me something Magazine cover worthy! Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Sorry about not posting the results still! I tried to get the other judges in on it but they were unavailable at the time, and then I had to work, followed by going to a friends house... and now I've got to sleep because I'm working 9-4 tomorrow too.

Winners will be up tomorrow shortly after I get home, I guarantee it. I've narrowed it down to 2 so all that's left is to pick the one...

Also, CD's will be sent out to all winners at the same time once I get the mailing addresses of everyone. I've got 2/3 so far (still need teh m1l3z's) and then the one from this last contest.

It was very close this time, as there was a nice battle for the top 3 positions this time around.

3rd - Strabmawr because that nose blunt into the sunset (seemed to be a common theme among many) is a beaut.

2nd - Midnight for both pics actually, they were both quite good. Good on you for creating a spot to use for the challenge as well.

Unfortunately I've only got 1 CD to give away though so it's got to go to im006 with the crook grind (1st pic). Very nice dude, but next time maybe put a virtual shirt over your virtual abs? haha.

Thanks to everyone for entering again. It may have been a small scale contest, but it was still interesting. Hopefully I'll be able to do some more of these in the future with other random small prizes.

To all the winners, PM me your mailing address if you'd like the CD sent to you. I'm still waiting on teh m1l3s and now im006 of course.

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with in the future :)

I never expected that.

Not that you care sonic, but I would have had these be the top 3:

#1 Midnight
It may not look really awesome at the higher resolution because of the quality of skate reel. But with the quality it should be viewed at:

It looks fucking great.

#2 StrabMawr
It's a good picture, but I think the angle could have been better.

Your pictures were insanely lame. Yes, offense.

I was looking for 3 things really:

1. did the picture look good, that's most important obviously.
2. shot composition - Rule of Thirds is something many people forgot, along with the use of space. Lots of technical stuff that's important in good photography.
3. creativity/originality - finding interesting spots, building you own, taking pics in places other people did etc.

The winners had at least 2 of the 3 elements in them, most often all of them.

im006, waiting on a mailing address and then I'm good to send them all out.

If Strab doesn't mind, I could post what I dislike about his handplant pic as an example. Constructive criticism only, because I think it'd help not only him but others get a better idea about how photography works. An eye for what's looks nice is only half the work, the rest is capturing it in the best way possible.

well your going to say that cause I said what I said earlier but you no and i no my pics were better then most of these hippies

SonicKaos
02-09-2009, 12:36 PM
Alright, well we'll see how this goes then.

First though, no im006 I haven't got a PM from you yet.

Now then...

Rule of Thirds is missing in the picture. It's very rare that you would want to center the focus of the image, because human eyes are drawn to specific parts of the picture in generally the same order. Bottom left, top left, top right, bottom right I believe. This can also be used to determine where the horizon could appear to avoid cutting the picture in half. Bringing my to the next point, the use of space. The sky is the majority of the photo here, which is pretty bland. In real life it may work out great and is actually quite difficult to expose properly, but the skies in Skate are a little dull, lacking clouds and whatnot to play with lighting.

In my opinion the picture would be much more interesting if you tilted down, raised the camera position slightly and moved a bit to the right. Thus the skater would be in the top left focal point and you'd be able to see a lot more of the interesting waterfront buildings. Perhaps zoom in a tad as well. The sun should stay relatively in the same place if you move the camera rather then panning, so it should generate the same effect.

Also as far as originality is concerned, it's been done unfortunately. One of the freeskate goals online is to handplant that and the similar one on the left side of the bowl. Therefore a lot of people do almost the exact same thing at the same spot, granted they probably don't pay attension to what's going on at the time because they just want to finish the goal.

That's what I can think of at the moment. It's still a good picture, but I think it has the potential to be better for sure.

im006v2
02-09-2009, 01:50 PM
K I'll send it again.

I remember being taught in elementary school that (with art) you basically want to have a focus point that the eye is drawn to first, and then have like a path that the eye follows around the picture (good use of lines) stuff like that. I tried to do that with all my pics.

Team Frosty is taking over!!!!!!!!!

SonicKaos
02-09-2009, 01:55 PM
Yup. You want to lead the viewers eye around the page basically. If something is centered, you're trapped, but at the same time you don't want to lead people off the page lol.

Got the PM this time. I'll mail them all out as soon as I can. I think post offices close in 5 minutes today unfortunately though =\

Roccityroller
02-09-2009, 06:18 PM
good pics. good to know that if i'm going to lose a photography contest, the judge at least understand the ROT. You'd be surprised at how many people will critique your pictures (irl and skate) without knowing the most basic principle of photography.

switchFooTexas
02-09-2009, 06:36 PM
I don't know exactly how the rule of thirds applies to photos since i've only used it when filming. But basically, atleast for filming, you want the skater to enter from one side, whether it be top left/right, or bottom left/right and then make a diagonal path across the frame. As for photography i'm sure this is basically the same. Keep the focal point across the frame of the photo, rather then centering it.

I may be wrong, but it is nice to know that Sonic understands Rule of Thirds and can judge properly

<3

SonicKaos
02-09-2009, 08:34 PM
Filming is a bit different then photography, since pictures are just one frame. It all depends on the effect you're going for really.

In general for continuity purposes (and ease of editing), the best way to jump from one shot to another is to have the focus walk off screen. That way you can pretty much do anything you want and it still makes sense to the viewer.

Filming is all about framing as well, but it's a bit different because you can ignore certain "rules" to create different effects with it. Leaving head room for people and when their moving, proper leadway in the direction the person is travelling is almost always consistant though. There are a lot of normal practices in filming to make it look good, but skateboarding has it's own style as well. Plus the way skating is generally filmed (ie filmer is also riding a board), it creates certain restrictions and therefore we're used to framing our shots a little differently.

I have to know this stuff, it's my job.

Message to Emmit, im006, teh m1l3s and JLord:

The CD's have been sent out to you today... Sorry for being so late. I forgot to send them before I went to Cuba because I was busy and excited, and then afterwords I ran into a bit of a financial problem with my stupid car costing me a small fortune... As of today though, they're in the mail and you'll get them in a little over a week for sure.

I mailed them out blank because Magic has yet to make a remix. Therefore you're able to put whatever you want on it.

Again, sorry about the delay.

Roccityroller

Rule of thirds as it applies to photography

http://photographyworkshoponline.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/rule-of-thirds-image1.jpg

Split the frame into thirds horizontally and vertically so you get an imaginary grid as ilustrated above. Naturally the human eye will go to one of the intersections before it goes to the center of the picture. Therefore, when shooting, you always want to attempt to place the subject or the focal point on one of those 4 intersections.

In the photography world, there's several ROT crop programs out there that can show you the grid when cropping your pic, but the more you pay attn to it the easier it is to just shoot that way and you start to notice the difference even when framing your pics

Sorry, I'm kind of a photog IRL
