Editing programs and general tips ?

I'm trying to get into the editing sides of things to speed things up and was wondering what some of the general guidelines are and some tips . All help would be appreciated. I semi think I'm over thinking things.

depending on editing software, it can be real simple to complex. I'd suggest reading/looking up some tutorials. Then it's all trial and error from there.
