the filming/skating part isn't bad at all! But about the editing, my advice (as a newly video editor too) is to, get Vegas, specially the 8.0 version. I stopped using windows movie maker just a few weeks ago and the transition to vegas isn't hard at all (specially to that version, it's so simple and has a very friendly interface).
Can your PC run Vegas? if so, get it.
And about converter softwares, there are several legit ones used by most of the guys here, but I think someone posted the proper S3 hd settings for Prism Video Converter. Try to look up for that.
