I finally purchased my camera yesterday, and I've been messing around with it, shooting on Manual as much as I can. Here's what I got so far if anyone's interested (lol): boxerman's flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66499280@N03/).

I'm new to this photography business, so I can only get better over the next months/years. Feedback is always appreciated, and tips are more than welcome as well.

If anyone is into photography and has a flickr or tumblr or any site of the sort, feel free to share! I'd love to see other people's stuff.

Thinking on getting a Olympus E-PL2, Canon EOS 600D or maybe Panasonic DMC-GF2 in a couple of month's once I've saved up some money, or maybe none of them.. haven't really made up my mind about it yet.
I haven't owned a camera since I was a kid, but starting to really get interested in photography.

I'll favourite your page for now, and let ya know when I have one up and ready when I have my camera.

Nice quality of your photos. Which camera do you use atm?

Edit: Just noticed that you have the Canon EOS 550D.
Working out good for you so far?

To be honest, I have no idea if the camera's you've mentioned are good since I'm new to photography, but I'm guessing they are. I've always loved Canon camera's though, so that's why I chose the Rebel t2i (or 550D). Since I got it, I've been using it a lot, trying to learn how to properly shoot photos on manual settings (setting the ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, etc.). Imo, it's a little hard at first (unless you already know all the basics lol), but it's so much fun to experiment with.

But just an advice I can maybe tell you (if you're considering the 600D). When I went to buy my camera, I was initially going for the 600D. There's something like a 200$ difference in price, and apparently, from what the people told me at the Camera store, said that there is virtually no difference between the 550D and the 600D, except a pivoting screen. A friend of mine, who has a degree in professional photography, told me to get the 550D, and get a better starting lens, since the kit lens isn't very good. If the pivoting screen is a necessity for you, then get the 600D, but if it doesn't matter for you, get the 550D and use the spare money you would've used for the 600D for a better starting lens. So now, my current set-up is a Canon 550D with a Tamron 17mm-50mm. To give you an idea of the price, the 550D body was 649.99$ + tax and the lens was 449.99$ + tax.

Once you get your camera and a flickr or wtv, let me know man! I'd love to see them.

Some good pointers there Boxer!
Sounds like you got a pretty good deal for your camera.

I'm not gonna pay less than 750$ for the body ( It's a bit more expensive in Sweden =/ ) then like you said, spend the rest on a better lens.
If you're interested in the cameras I mentioned, there's this guy Kai Wong that does some very good and interesting camera reviews. http://www.youtube.com/user/DigitalRevCom#p/search/1/4mWnEd7qITQ

But yeah, we'll see which camera I will get. And I'll comment here once I have some photos up.

Btw do you get any cool filters and such with your camera?

Knex. Love your black and white photo with the child in the middle. Good work.

wow Knex, those photos are really sick, I only saw a few, but from what I've seen, they're really sick.

I'll defs look into those reviews man, they're always good when you're not sure of certain things. Let me know when you got everything and have put up pictures! What do you mean by filters?

to be honest, I'm not even sure what a tilt-shift effect is hahaha I'm such a noob... but my camera pretty much just came as it was. I bought the 550D body with a tamron lens, no extras lol

Hehe. Tilt-shift is an effect that blurs out the top and the bottom of the picture, focusing only in the middle. So if you take picture of some people/buildings whatever while being far away from them, they'll look like miniatures/toys. I just made up my mind about getting the Nikon D3100 with the lens that comes with it. Looks like a good beginners kit since the D3100 is a really good choice for amateurs.

Might save up for some other lens later.

that's where i learned everything i know.

Knex knows what's up when it come to photog.

any effect described as "fake" is prolly not that good.

Play, experiment, shoot. Best way to learn.

I have some work out there but not on flickr. mostly just my own use, maybe i'll post some tomorrow.

edit: I'm a nikon man, but the T2i is a GREAT beginner cam. good choice. i need a new body soon. trying to decide if i want to go full frame or not.

damn thanks a shitload for that site Roc! I'll definitely use it until I go to school next year for professional photography, but in the meantime, I'll get to know the basics so thats really sick. And that's what I heard about the t2i too, not too expensive, really good especially for a beginner cam, so it was a done deal for me. I'm definitely not hating anything about it yet, as I shot 1000+ photos in 4 days haha

Best way to play with effects is ofc with propper lenses or in photoshop ofc.

Good to know Roc. Will take about 2 month's give or take until I have my camera. Will surely ask some questions about photo's later.

Are you familiar with lenses as well or just photography? I'm wondering because the camera I will be getting includes the Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55/3,5-5,6G VR lense, and I guess it's a good starting lens.

But I wanna eventually do some macro and/or long distance shooting as soon as possible. So which lenses would be good for that?

Really have no clue which lenses that are good for those purposes for a Nikon D3100.

Nice photos Agus!
Really liked both the forrest photos.

Thanks man!

Also, all the pics (besides the last one) were taken with the family camera, a D3100.

I have the kit VR 18-55 in both cameras, plus a Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO D I use for macro and teles.
Mine is broken (AF doesn't work at all), but I could manage to take some good pics with it, I don't know what you're looking for, but as photography novice, I can say that Sigma 70-300 is one nice piece of glass.
Here are some pics taken with it.

all i ask is that, if you're new to photography, read up on composition and the rule of thirds. I see too many people with nice cams that take terrible pictures because they don't know how to compose a photo

Photos != Pictures
Photos > Pictures

Boxerman08
09-24-2011, 01:22 PM
I'll have to look up on composition, but I know about the rule of thirds, or at least I know it now lol I know a couple of people that have been into photog and they told me that I use the rule of third in a lot of my pictures, and I had no idea what it was until they explained lol but I'll look into composition though. Thanks for the tips Roc

Roccityroller
09-24-2011, 09:15 PM
You'd be amazed at how much the rule of thirds can make your pictures look 10 times better.

go out, take a picture, any random picture

take same picture again but pay attn to lining things up with the ROT.

???

Profit.

The first thing to look up when buying a camera is the manual.
Read every line of the camera's manual, it helps way more than you think. Atleast it helped me alot when I got mine.

Yeah I started reading it recently, learned a bunch of shit about ISO and a couple more stuff. I have to finish reading it, eventually lol First time I've read a manual from something I buy

i never read the manual, don't think i ever even opened it.

Got a new wide angle converter today in the mail. $30 for a .43x, so far i love it. it renders the stock flash useless, however, and my buddy is borrowing my SB-600 atm.

Here's a couple extended exposure shots i did today to try it out. My tripod is falling apart and it shows. but still, best $30 i've spent on this. Next is a nice, fast prime lens.

The thing is, when I first thought about getting into photog, I spoke to Bullet (or something like that) about it, since he films IRL shit as well (he has a Canon 60D w/ that kind of lens), and he told me to start with that type of lens, so, blindly and excited about getting one, without knowing much about photog, I went on ebay and bought a 50mm prime f/1.8 lens for like 50$, but I bought it for SLR lol so for now I can't use it, but I can just get an adapter and hopefully it'll be alright...

ahhhhh makes sense, but what I meant was that I think I personally would've liked it uncropped, but I have no idea what you cropped out, so its all good lol maybe having the filmer in the shot would add something sick to it? idk haha you're more experienced than I am in photog, so maybe I'm just talking nonsense.

I shot this with the D3100 + 18-55VR.

As you can see, it's a GREAT setup for getting into photography. The only special thing I used for this shot was an external flash, pointing to white foamboard 2 ft to the right of the dish with the water, so I can get a better effect than If I'd use the camera's integrated flash.

18-55 is a great starter lens. Kinda weak/slow in low light so i would reccomend a tripod.

Filmed one of my buddies for his in-line video yesterday, probably gonna be a sponser-me vid or something. I'll be filming him for the next 2-3 months, so I'll for sure get some decent footy/photos eventually. I got loads of proper clips from him yesterday. I'll eventually make the edit as well and post it around for him to get more noticed.

To him skateboarding is almost like second nature. He doesn't even skate lol He used to like 7-8 years ago, but he skates maybe once or twice every 1-2 years haha he is insane though. Maybe 5 years ago, I went to meet up some friends to go for a sesh, and I met up my friends at this 7 stair spot. He was at the top of the stairs and he yelled "This is for you Boxer", goes back, does a quick prayer, and pops a kick flip down the big 7 first try lol He still rips, doesn't go as big on a board as he used to, but he's still pretty good.

This spot is at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec. All of these different spots were there lol There are so many spots to skate/in-line or even snowboard/ski there. Definitely one of the landmarks of Montreal, both for tourists and for athletes of all kinds. There's also the well-known "Big-O" that many old-school pros have been there such as Steve Caballero and others like that. You might've heard it before, or seen pictures there... but then again, might not be known in the States lol

There's a kid from there named Kevin LaPierre, rollerblader, came down and destroyed a contest in Buffalo a few weeks back. The dude is one of the illest unknowns i seen in a minute. really fun to watch skate. Find him, film him, make video, profit, repeat.

Boxer, I assume you were using a tripod? It looks a tad choppy, almost mechanical, on the camera movement. I suggest loosening the head mount almost completely. A ballhead would be optimal but those are expensive.

@ Roke: haha damn Roke, forget about me rebuilding this, I would NEVER pull this off... I could try, but I would never be able to make the Olympic Stadium itself, maybe the spots around though, but it wouldn't be an exact replica ;)

@ Roc: Montreal has LOADS of good street spots, the Olympic Stadium is one of them that has spots for generally all levels of skating/rollerblading. but damn, I don't think I've ever heard of that dude... would be good to film him though, would get my name across as well haha

@ Knex: Yeah man, I was using a tripod for this one. I like how it came out, but it does look really mechanical. I just didn't wanna get shaky clips haha but I also wanted to use my tripod, because I purchased it a while ago, but never used it. But this video was the first time I shot video with my Rebel t2i, so I definitely have to get better, but ever since I moved away from all my friends, it's hard to get practice. I don't know any locals where I live right now, and there's no near skatepark so it's hard as fuck to meet new people lol

Well I have a Nikon D50 with a staggering amount of 6.1 mpix. They went out of production hella years ago.
Thing is, I could care less about megapixels and whatnot as I rarely do anything for print, and 6.1mpix is still good enough for digital publishing.
However; as you neatly put it, I WANT MOAR VIDEOZ. Can't stop thinking about how my cheap, dirty little 50mm f/1.8 could produce visual porn.

Fisheye... meh. I thought i wanted a fish/wide lens. then i got one. Loved it. Then i got a FASTER lens (F/1.8) and i haven't used my wide hardly at all since then. You'd be surprised what a 30mm can do.

nah well fisheye on single tricks like this can look amazing when you're super close, but I still like the shot I took. A friend and I were shooting at another spot before that, and a fisheye on the other spot would've been AMAZING. My friend was going for a fs flip over a 7-8 stair handrail. It was sick as fuck, but it was a quick bust. And the few shots I got, I had my friend that was filming rolling in front of me lol but I'll for sure go back at those spots (and others) to shoot some stuff.

Lol I'm gonna stop you there, I liked the park, don't get me wrong but it's so slippery for bike riding, and because it was inaugurated a few weeks ago it still doesn't have any trees or vegetation to hide from the sun, and yesterday the sun was sahara-like, no shit. 37.C (idk, like 100F or something) all day, under the sun, I'm completely red right now, and had headache for hours yesterday.

It's unbelievable how a city with such a low population (most of it, very low incomes) has like 5 skateplazas, unlike my city, capital of the country, with thousands of skaters and bike riders.

Jerr - composition on those pics (esp the bridge one) are great. The first and last really tell a story.

Shooting snow is hard, because you have the darkness of the shadows and the brightness of the snow/sky. You can tell that your light metering was done of the bridge because the sun and sky are so over exposed. Are you shooting with a DSLR? Tripod? i dabbled in HDR awhile back, which is really fun if you can get it right but it accounts for a high dynamic range (light-dark, its what 'HDR' stands for) by utilizing multiple exposures, usually 1 'prime' exposure then a couple 1-2 steps over exposed and 1-2 steps under exposed. Obviously this does not work with moving targets but when done properly it looks amazing.

Here's a good example, you get alot of the details in the dark ranges with having 'blown out' lights.

First of all, nice pics, to all of you guys. Knexor props for such a nice pic, and move. you got skills bro!

I'm really looking into purchasing a fisheye recently, and came across this. If anyone knows a lot about lenses and whatnot, feel free to let me know if it's a good deal or not. I've read the reviews and they all seem super positive about it lol I'd buy it, but then again, when I started looking into that kind of stuff when Bullet was giving me some info, I went and bought the wrong lens haha so anyways, let me know if you guys think its a good deal or not

http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-FE8M-C-F3-5-Fisheye-Canon/dp/B002LTXQUE

Well, it's a decent lens for it's price. Idk much about Canon but I think you T2i has in-body autofocus option so, that's good, very good.
Those Rokinon are basically the same lenses (body, glasses, etc.) as the Peleng, Bower, Vivitar (the only diference with this is that the vivitar has a red stripe instead of the golden one). The tokina 11-16 comes from the same building too I think.

To be honest, being you from Canada, a First World Country, I would suggest you save up more money and get legit wide angle lens for your camera. (Once again, Idk much about Canon, but for example, one of (if not) the best fisheye lenses for Nikon are the Nikon 10.5 AF (even the Sigma 10 one...).

These 'cheap' lenses has not-so-good mirror coating (which leads to blurring and cromatic averration in the peripherical area of the composition) and many other downs.

I mean, if I had the money right now I would buy these because I can't wait to get this kinda lenses (as much as you do I bet), but they're still VERY expensive to us down here. Even more the nikon ones. How much are the best canon wides worth up there??

@ knex: fuckin dope picture dude! you got tranny skills! ;)
@ agus: I've been dying to get a fisheye, but I'm probably the worst at saving up money lol the "cheapest" one I could find in-store was like 700$... this one sells for like 300$ and from the reviews, it's apparently extremely underrated, so I'd love to give that lens a try.

that's probably what I'll do :) Sometime within the next month or 2 (hopefully), it'll be mounted on my t2i body haha and to answer your question, I have no idea if the t2i has in-body autofocus lol I'm not an expert at all, I don't know all these kinds of things... yet! ;) I'll be learning a bunch of shit soon though! Good for you man! That's really great dude, hope you get accepted.

About the autofocus, here is a brief explanation.
I've just done some research and yes, your camera has built-in autofocus, that means, you can use lenses that has no AF (for example, the 18-55 that comes with the kit has AF, but a 50mm f/1.8 doesnt), and still be available to use the autofocus, instead of focusing manually with the lenses focus ring.
For example, you could get also a cheap (but good, so good) 50mm. f/1.8 and you'll still have the autofocus option, thanks to your camera.

I don't know if there's a switch or something in the camera's body for turning ON this option, but for example here is the Nikon D90, you can see both the lenses and body autofocus switches

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90/users-guide/images/D3S_2783-front.jpg

Long story short, your T2i's built-in focus motor will do the autofocus work if you get that fisheye.
Long story even shorter, go get those mirrors naoo hah.

EDIT: here are some random/skate pics taken with a t2i and the rokinon

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5148/5762909617_79f8cd6e8e_z.jpg

EDIT2: Well, now that I'm checking the amazon post, looks like those lenses don't have the AF nomenclature in their name, so they probably don't have autofocus option, not even with AF body cameras, which sucks.

Atleast they're quite luminous at f3.5 and I think the hyperfocal for these is like 3ft, so, if you shoot your picture with the f number set to 3.5, everything from 3ft away from you and beyond should be well focused, (in theory).

Canon's do image stabilization in the body as well, if i remember right, which doesn't perform as well but means you dont NEED to by IS/VR lenses. So you got that going for you.

Dude, really good pictures. The first one is very well composed, and it's interesting how you picked a wide aperture for it (the sun's flare efect is because of it, It doesn't look bad imo, but this wide aperture made the pic look a lil bit 'blurry', if you've used a smaller aperture (like f10, maybe even f8), the focused area would have been more deep, if that's the correct term.
Second one is great, I don't have anything to say about it. Well framed, and in this kinda pic you can appreciate how wide apertures let you handle the depth of field in such an abrupt way. I like the bokeh effect on that last pic.

What camera do you have? Got it with the kit lenses?
If your camera's body has built-in AF, don't even think about it and get the 50mm 1.8 (works like 75 in APS-C sensors I believe), or if you have the money, an AF-S 35mm. (aprox. true 50mm on said sensors).
About the teles, I don't know prices over there, but as I said, if your camera has built in AF, and Image stabilizer, you could get a cheap but still good tele without those features (maybe a sigma), sell the kit lenses, and get the new Sigma 10-20....

The lens is fully manual, which is hard for me because I'm really not used to this at all, but it gives me good practice. I can't even set the aperture on with the camera haha I have a wheel on the lens I have to rotate it to set it to the desired aperture, and then I choose the iso and f-stop settings with the camera.

Boxerrrr, thats sick bro! congratulations! Nice pic for being one of the first with it.
An advice I would give you is, idk exactly your lenses, but not every set of those has the same infinity focus point set well (excuse my english, I bet you undertood it tho). to get hyperfocal I think, it could either be 1.5ft, or 1.3ft, or further (at widest f stop, of course). Don't scratch it with a razor haha but a lil piece of tape will do the job well.

Roc, if by smooth you mean, un-sharpen, then yes, it's a lil bit blurry. I don't have autofocus with my 70-300, so I do everything on manual focus mode. IT SUCKS for this kind of photography, even worst with this kind of lenses that aren't actually macro prime lenses so the focus ring is not that accurate/comfortable.

I took just fifty-ish pics, not much for this waterdrop technique but to be honest, after forty tries of dealing with these lenses, a very bad cheap an unsteady tripod and my speedlite working like shiet, I got mad and left.
Oh, and most of shots have that crown-shape because I still can't get the perfect timing. Of course it's practice, but next time I'll try to add some viscosity to the ecuation.

haha thanks man! It was just a tester, because I wanted to experiment with the lens outside, and I thought a picture of that electric tower could be sick, all distorted and stuff. I definitely have to get used to it though, because I've never dealt with a fully manual lens. But what do you mean about the "lil piece of tape will do the job well"? haha

agusbmxarg

Like, most of the time you'll be shooting either landscapes or skateboarding (I assume), and for those cases, you need to set up the focus to ∞. But in some lenses, not always the inifite focus is at the ∞ mark; it could be closer, like, 1 mark closer, or somewhere in between. You could just stick a piece of tape where in the focus ring where the focus is properly set, so the next time shooting you don't need to calibrate them again.

As I was told (I could be wrong), these kinda lenses, at widest f stop (f3.5), 1.5ft from you to the infinity gets pefectly focused, so maybe, if your shooting skateboarding for a few days in a row, you wont ever need to calibrate the focus again.

Fuck it. Just shoot pics man, hahah. Good for you for getting these. I'd be stoked for months with a set of wides.

Ohhh yeah I get what you're saying man! It is true what you're saying, I read on a review of that lens that the lens, at the ∞ focus mark, it wasn't exactly at ∞. I'll have to play around with it, but I bought this lens mainly for skateboarding, and for sure other stuff like landscapes and maybe mess around with portraits too haha but you should get a lens like that too man! Damn, loving those pictures Agus! Those RC pictures are soo sick hahaha and the picture of your neighbour's cat is dope too!

And damn you Boxer, you made me crave a fisheye. I'll probably just get a 50mm lens (or 35mm; 1.6 crop sensor) and a 55-250mm/70-300mm lens first.

Haha get one! They're just too sick, I love my lens so much. And that shot is really sick!

35mm*... typing fail. and the D40 is actually a 1.5 sensor. I'm lookin to upgrade to a D3100 in the near future though.

Ahhhh I'm gonna stop you there heheh, go for the 720p @30fps. The D3K1 is my sis camera, the one I used to use before getting my current one, and, 1080 at 24f is cool I guess, but somehow the 30fps doesn't look good.
But yeah, with a proper handle you wont have any problems shooting videos in hd quality. It's a DSLR, but still, good for filming, I guess.

I don't want to spend money on a high-end video camera and have to lug 2 cams around. This is a best-of-both-worlds kind of situation. I can justify spending money on it to shoot video because i will be able to make the money back shooting local shows and stuff.

Yeah, I don't want to sound arrogant, since I'm a beginner photographer and don't even have that kind of setup but, I've always thought fisheye shots makes everyone get that 'photographer status'. Like filming, everyone think fisheye clips are so professional and look so cool, but as longlenses, their have their special technique, rules, disadvantages and benefits.
Altho I can't deny theyre sick lenses to shot with, and us who are in the world of skateboarding (or any other extreme sport) can get the best out of them even after 10 days of having our first camera, and that's something to think about.

You guys should try street photography.
Don't take this the wrong way, but anyone with a good lens and a general knowledge of using a camera can take shots of droplets on leaves etc. Don't get me wrong, that's cool too!
However, I'd love to see you guys go out into town, shove your cameras up peoples faces, take sneaky snapshots or simply asking people that interest you for a portrait. It's a thrill, and it's a lot more rewarding when your photos tell some kind of story. It's also a good way to meet new people.
This isn't critiscism or anything, I just would like to see your cities and people and everyday lives.
Just a thought, haha.

Feedback is always welcome. I'll only speak for myself, some of my shots are indoor, yes, but most of them are not, and what I always try to do is not to take a non-improvised photo. Like portraits for example, the unconcerned and natural look the improvised portaits (and pics in general) is always a great thing to work with, and you're totally right about the story and/or mysticism behind a picture.
When you say take your cam with you downtown, you may mean doing some kind of journalistic photography, in the streets. Well that's something to be honest I'm not that much into, and it's a bit harsh and unsafe because of the high theft rate and all that.

Thanks man :) yeah I develop my stuff, although don't do any wet printing which is where most of the darkroom magic happens; I just scan the negatives.

My usual kit when I go out:

Oh man, when i was a co-op back in school, we used to make machine nameplates with a photo-sensitive aluminum in a darkroom. I used to go in there after work and develop my prints for hours. There was days i went in a 5 and didn't get home til 7-8 at night. I miss that shit. I don't really have any room for a darkroom either tho. Scanning negatives is still a good way to play film-cameraman though.

That's awesome. I wish I could have taken up photo when I was in school... couldn't afford a camera back then so didnt even bother.

Once I graduated HS and got a job that actually paid decently (plus my first credit card) I finally took the plunge. I started off with digital, Nikon D80 with 50mm f1.8 about 5 years back. Played with that for a few years then upgraded to a d300 and bought a bunch of old Nikon AIS Primes (20mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2, 80mm f1.4). Then began lusting for a D700 (fullframe). Got that, used it for a few years then got the Voightlander R4a rangefinder... shortly have getting the rangefinder I sold all my digital stuff and have been shooting film for around 3 years now.

I have a little Sony NEX-5n (highly recommended, use an adapter for my rangefinder lenses, and it suites my digital needs just fine.

Loving the colors man. Gotta love Canon colors.
Gotta love that 8mm aswell. Fuck it, I'm kinda sick of just having a 50mm prime.

Thanks dude!
You should invest in a new lens if you're sick of your 50mm prime ;) But you snap some sick photos with it, I love the focus on the cat and the really blurred background. I should get an adapter for mine... (by accident, last year I bought a 50mm prime for an slr, not dslr lol)

I will man. So far I have saved like 70% of the cost of those 8mm. f3.5. Next month I'm getting one for sure.
Btw, hows the manual focus thing working for you?
How about having the skater on focus when shooting him while moving?
I'm aware shooting with them in low light might be tuff because of the f3.5 top aperture. The worst part is that my camera doesn't handle high ISOs very well. :(

That's sick that you'll get one man, so fun to use.
The manual focus seems to be working alright for me, it's just that the lens itself is fully manual, so i have to set the aperture and all the shit using the rings on the lens and stuff, but after a while I figure out which settings look decent and what not lol
I've tried filming with it though, and it's a blast, much more enjoyable than shooting photos imo. I wish I had some good people to film on a daily basis..
