Letterboxes have nothing to do with cropping and everything to do with aspect ratio, but thanks for stopping by jerrel

Actually they do.

Some editing programs auto-stretch the clips you import to the project aspect ratio, but if the clips it does import still have these letterboxes you can crop out, the final product will result in having these black bars.

as to the cropping issue, for me it defo was an aspect ratio issue which I have actually managed to fix--I don't crop.
