one interesting measurement i found, comparing it to my current board...
although my new board is only an inch shorter, there 4" less space in the center area between the bolts...

I fucking LOVE that they can put Peralta's name back on the reissues.

I came back from an injury by getting a Vato's Bones reissue deck, double risers, and pool wheels with the intent to basically start over from when I was a kid and relearn everything I never could bring myself to do growing up. I now hang the deck proudly on my wall, but always wished it didn't say "Powell Classic" on the topsheet when I was riding it.

Here's hoping the old-tech deck does for your style what it did for mine, sir.

thanks dude, can't wait to skate this thing. I have a feeling no concave and that long popless nose are gonna do wonders for flatground. I'll probably use it just for that, and keep my Brew Killers deck for bombing hills and other misc non flatgroundish stuff

I think I still have an old thrashed out Welinder and Mullen in storage somewhere. That is a lovely board you have there. Can't wait to see new footy with it. If they still have the old habit (mushrooming and seperating) I'd recommend grabbing a set of tailbones for use on each end as it will add probably 1000% to the life of it from the abuse.

Edit: Forgot on the tailbones you'll need to sand them down so they go flush as they have a tendency to always hang a bit over the rounded edges of the deck.

thanks man, I'll see how it goes, but i think for this first wave of old school boards I'd rather not have any guards/tailbones or whatever. Especially since i love grabbing the board. I'll see how i like it, how it wares and lasts.

I was on the east coast, at a skatepark a buddy runs, and one of the local pro's and some Ishod Wier guy (HELL of a nice guy, and yeah, I know he's one of the best am's out) got into a convo about 'em. Local guy said they're based on the 80's era Indy design. I love 'em. They're stable enough that I ride 'em looser than the indy's I came off of.

Generally, for the last... Shit, 20 years I've only been able to fall in love with Indy's. All I've ridden since... Hell, the last new trucks before I tried the Ace's were Fury's when they came out, but I switched out of those pretty damn quick. The Ace's replaced some 7 year old Indy's I was totally married to, and I'm VERY pleased with them. Like I said, the old design. Makes them feel very, very familiar. I'd figure with all that kick-ass freestyling you do the extra stability would help. I'm an old pool/bowl/transition junkie, and they let me loosen up to the point that I'm finding new lines at the park I've been riding on and off for over 10 years. I love 'em.

I've got the Ace's bookmarked, i'll see how i like my indy's when they come in. If they're too wide i'll throw em on my old deck and pick up the Ace's for my new one.

Finally got my new board set up. Got the trucks as tight as they'll go and some 52 mm filmer wheels, 80a, super soft. This is going to be a strictly flatground board. Its really fun having two oldschool decks at the same time. With them both set up so differently,(one full loose crazy wheel bite, hard wheels, the other super tight with super soft wheels) I've never been so happy with my set up. Now i just need to get my own longboard

Stick with first aid tape for fingers as you still keep your control and it's cheap. Gloves tend to snag on shit too much.

really not a fan of gloves, better off taping your fingers like Mullen did, more control. I do wear them occasionally if we're bombing hills and putting our hands down, little bert slides and carves and stuff, I just dont like them for grabbing the board, not enough control.

finally had a nice 2 hour flatground sesh on the new board...

Its so responsive, the most subtle movements go a long way.it takes some getting used to, but im loving it. In combination with the soft wheels its made my manual/spacewalk combinations longer and better than ever. The longest one was like 45 sec haha. I'd just spacewalk in circles, doing little manuals here and there just to get my balance back, having a blast

I am going to get those Ace trucks, smaller and lighter does sound better, and it would be nice to have a thin enough truck to do primos if i ever decide to get back into them, cuz right now the indys hang out just enough to make em impossible...

I've messed with spacewalks a bit..
do you keep your shoulders straight?
I've been keeping my shoulders out right and just leaning my lower body into the spacewalk.. feels so different..
you're skating the flatter board? Never would've guessed you'd have better results.

I just stay loose, swing the arms, twisting with the hips. You have to get into a rhythm, just keep pumping.

I found the funnest way to spacewalk is to just manual around in circles, throwing in spacewalks here and there, the focus being on just keeping the manual not how big of a rotation you get on the spacewalk itself. Then just increase the ratio of spacewalk:manual and try to get them longer. Getting spacewalks to the point where you are doing a series of 180 rotations is the funnest thing but definitely takes a lot of practice to get to that level, baby steps.

I'd recommend just really working on your slow manuals, you've got the long tennis court manuals and whatnot, try manualing until you run out of speed then just keep holding it and spacewalk to get your momentum back. Switch to and from a manual to a spacewalk is a great way to quickly change your centre of gravity and momentum.

look at how mullen is doing the full 180 degree spacewalks, that may help. My board is almost the exact size and shape haha

definitely my most watched vid, always preferred Mullen's old contest line kind of stuff over his video parts. Its just really inspiring to see an almost 4 min flawless flatground run. Definitely a direction my skating has been going, less and less about a single trick, more trying to just get every trick on lock and into contest style lines, its an incredible workout and real fun

Haven't read the thread in a bit. One of the things to point out about the finger tape. Many of the freestylers taped their fingers because it gave them more grip on various hand related tricks. The other reason is that back in the Early-Mid 80's some would also put small pieces of griptape on the bottom of the board in strategic locations where they grabbed a lot. The tape + grip gave them hella control at initiating fingerflips and board varials. Those who didn't use tailbones on nose/tail also gripped the ends to help with casper control (non-slipping shoes is nice) and such. I remember when Madrid Fly Paper hit the scene those of us who had freestyle boards stole everyones fly punch outs (like Grizzly Grip now has with teddy bears) to use on our decks. Per Welinder was one of the first I ever saw use lots of griptape on the bottom.

Never wore knee pads much like the old Rector ones since they were so bulky, but the slip on sports knee pads (like 1/2 inch neoprene. i call them volleyball knee pads) can help. Hella lame looking if not wearing jeans over them. Shin guards I highly recommend (I used the same ones I used for Soccer) and these days I'd go with Pro Tec black spade ones which are like $25-$30 bucks (Full Set of pads for street is like $50). If you ride in low top shoes you *may* consider the Pro Tec Ankle guards as you start doing more gnarly stands and flips. I never wore any special socks, but my mom always had me these over the calf super thick Hanes socks. I suppose you could consider getting some Thick cushion running socks which I'd imagine would help. Doing a quick google it seems Thorlos socks are well liked. Shoes play the biggest part there and back in the day all I would wear was Vision Street Wear. Not the most padding, but they were durable as hell.

Edit: Very young Mullen at Kona with crazy pads on. He had to wear every protective item known to man cause his dad wouldn't let him skate otherwise. Nowadays he only wears shin guards.
